How To Install a Quad Receptacle or Double Duplex Receptacles

In today’s article, we are going to discuss how to install a quad receptacle or double duplex receptacles. In this article, I will provide step-by-step instructions with pictures for this installation. Please click on the images to enlarge them. Each picture will open in a new window.
Step 1. Measure for the desired height of the receptacle box. We typically install these at 12 to 18 inches above the floor to the top of the box. I recommend matching the existing height of the other receptacles in your home. Measure height for receptacle box
Step 2. Install the 2-gang receptacle box. Install the 2 gang receptacle box
Step 3. Install the NM cable (romex). A 15 amp circuit requires 14/2 with ground and a 20 amp circuit requires 12/2 with ground. Install the romex
Step 4. Strip the cable and ensure there is at least 1/2″ of the sheathing sticking into the box. Ensure there is at least one half of an inch of the sheathing in the box
Step 5. Staple the romex to the center of the stud. Your first staple should be within 12 inches of the receptacle box and every 4 1/2 feet thereafter. Staple romex within 12 inches of the box
Step 6. You need 6 to 8 inches of wire, measured from the back of the box. 6 to 8 inches of wire measured from the back of the box
Step 7. Strip the wires and install 2 – approximate 6 inch long pigtails on each wire. Strip the wires and install 2 - 6 inch pigtails
Step 8. Install wirenuts on the end of each connection. Install wirenuts
Step 9. Fold the wires into the back of the box. Fold the wires into the back of the box
Step 10. Strip the wire ends and bend a half circle on the wire ends. Connect the ground then neutral wires to the receptacle. Repeat this for the other receptacle. Connect the ground then neutral wires to the receptacle
Step 11. Connect the hot wire to the receptacle. Repeat this for the other receptacle. Connect the hot wire to the receptacle
Step 12. Install the receptacles. Install the receptacles
Step 13. Install the double duplex cover plate. Install the double duplex receptacle cover

I am doing some electrical work for my mother-in-law, she wants to replace a new light in ceiling of closed in porch plus a security light on outside of same porch how can I do this with just the one switch she already has and to keep the other box on all the time for the motion light!! thank you, Ralph

There are several ways this can be done. It just depends upon your scenario. The simplest and easiest way is if there is a hot and neutral in the switch box and you can install the motion light just above the switch box. To do this, cut in a box outside where you will install the new motion sensor light, fish a 2 conductor cable with a ground down to the switch box and make your terminations. I really need to know more information about your exact scenario before I can present more options.

I want to install a new light fixture. The fixture itself has 1 white wire, 1 black wire and the ground wire. However the wiring from the house has an additional red wire. When I wired it, I left the red wire capped, but when I turned the switch on, the circuit breaker flipped. How should I connect the wires?

I’m not sure. There are several possible options. You need to check voltage and see what you have. Check between the neutral (white wire) and each colored wire. Check with the switch off and with the switch on. The connections should be, ground to ground, neutral to neutral and the black from the light to the switched conductor. The switched conductor will read approximately 120 volts between the neutral and itself with the switch on and 0 volts with the switch off.


Leslie asks:
I changed a 4 prong dryer cord to a 3 prong cord. I dried two loads of wash then the dryer stopped working. The original cord connected at three spots on the block – then had forth cord that connected to a different area on the back of the dryer. The 3 prong cord only had 3 connections. Do you know what could have happened to make it stop working?

I’m not a dryer expert, but I’ll bet that a high limit switch is bad. This typically happens when you move. The lint from over the years is forced down the lint trap and gets clogged right below the dryer’s door. The lint drops down a thin rectangular duct where is usually changes to a round duct below the door at the bottom of the dryer. The lint usually gets clogged at this “bottle neck”, the dryer overheats and burns out the high limit switch.

Bosch Hammer Drills Recalled Due to Risk of Injury

Bosch 1191VSR hammer drill On June 12, 2008 Robert Bosch Tool Corp., of Mount Prospect, IL recalled approximately 9,700 hammer drills. The drill can continue to operate after the trigger has been released, posing a risk of injury to operators. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled hammer drill is blue with “BOSCH” printed on the side. The model number 1191VSR can be located on the product nameplate mounted on the side of the motor. The product’s packaging will be marked as 1191VSRK (the “K” indicates that the hammer drill was packaged with a case in a kit). Only drills with a serial number that begins with “7” are included in the recall.

The hammer drills were sold at Menards and other hardware retailers and industrial distributors nationwide from July 2007 through April 2008 for about $100. They were manufactured in Malaysia.

Infra-Red Sauna Rooms Recalled from Sauna By Airwall Due to Fire Hazard

IC 2 Infra-Red Sauna Room On June 12, 2008 Sauna By Airwall Inc., of Bellflower, California recalled approximately 225 infra-red sauna rooms. The heating unit and fuse can fail, leading to overheating of the saunas. This defect can result in a serious fire hazard to consumers. Sauna By Airwall has received four reports of fires resulting in property damage. There have been no reports of personal injury.

The recalled infra-red sauna rooms are made of wood and include the following model numbers: IC I, IC II, IC III, IC IV, and IC V. The model number is indicated on the serial plate located on the back of the machine, in the lower right hand corner.

These units were sold by authorized Sauna By Airwall dealers nationwide from November 2006 through April 2008 for between $600 and $4,000. They were manufactured in China by Xuzhou Waterstar Electronic Co.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and disconnect from power source, and contact the firm for a refund. All known users have been contacted. Answers to Electrical Questions About Ceiling Fans in a Sunroom, Installing GE Dryer Parts and Rewiring a Chandelier

I have a question about a ceiling fan. I had a sunroom enclosure added to the back of my home in 2002. Electricians came out and wired it with outlets and I had a ceiling fan w/overhead light installed. The fan has worked well but in the past year or so I noticed that it really is not spinning as fast as it used to. The overhead light is still bright though. I am worried that there is a problem with the wiring? When I have it on the highest setting it does spin but is more like a medium spin with very little air flow. Thanks for taking my question.

If you are 100% certain that the fan is really on the high setting, then I recommend turning off the power to this circuit, open up the switch box and check for loose connections or corrosion. If everything looks ok here, then drop the fan canopy and check for loose connections or corrosion here as well.

If corrosion is the problem, then cut the corrosion off, re-strip the wire and try using grease-filled wire nuts. These are typically used for waterproof connections. If there is corrosion at the switch, then try using an antioxidant compound on the terminations and use a weatherproof cover plate. If there is an issue with corrosion, try installing an exhaust fan controlled by a humidistat.

Are you using a fan speed control switch? If so, check to see if it is working properly or on the correct setting. Try checking your voltage at the fan as well. You should have approximately 120 volts. Anything below 115 volts is probably a voltage drop issue. You can also try taking your fan to an electric motor repair shop to have it tested.

There are several things than can be checked, I suggested some of the most common above. If you suspect that there may be problems with the wiring, then I recommend calling a licensed or qualified electrician.
