Dimplex North America Recalls Remote Control Kits for Electric Fireplaces and Stoves Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

Remote control kit | Model # 47-1010R On March 16, 2010 Dimplex North America, of Ontario, Canada recalled approximately 700,000 remote control kits for electric fireplaces and stoves. The plug-in wall unit can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard. Dimplex has received about 5,000 reports of the plug-in wall units overheating including 19 reports of damage beyond the remote control and one report of a house fire in Columbus, Ohio that resulted in considerable property damage.

The recalled remote control kits are used with Dimplex, Electraflame, Symphony, Optiflame, Electralog and Charmglow brand electric fireplaces, stoves and fireplace inserts. They include a black or dark gray hand-held remote control and also a black or dark gray wall unit that plugs into an electrical wall outlet. Recalled model numbers include 47-1001, 47-1010-R and APT-1315. The model number is printed on either the plug-in unit or the hand-held remote control. The fireplace or stove’s brand name is printed on both units.

These units were sold at mass merchandise, home improvement, specialty fireplace and furniture retailers from January 1998 through December 2008 for between $200 and $1,500 for the fireplaces and stoves. This recall includes remote control kits subsequently replaced under warranty. They were manufactured in China.

You should immediately stop using the remote control kits, unplug the power cord from the remote control kit’s wall unit, remove the wall unit from the electrical outlet and contact Dimplex for a free replacement kit. You can continue to operate the fireplace or stove by plugging the fireplace or stove’s electrical cord directly into an electrical outlet.

Fluke Recalls Noncontact Electrical Tester Due to Shock or Burn Hazard

Fluke-1AC-I VoltAlert Voltage Tester On March 11, 2010 Fluke Corporation, of Everett, WA recalled approximately 33,000 VoltAlert® voltage detectors. The testers can fail to give an indication of live voltage, resulting in the operator falsely believing the electrical power is off, posing a risk of serious injury or death from electrical shock or thermal burns. No injuries have been reported.

The Fluke voltage testers look like a pen with a yellow, white and gray body. The testers measure 90 to 1000 volts alternating current (VAC). “Fluke” and the model number are printed on the front of each unit. The recall involves Fluke 1AC-A1-I VoltAlert® tester.

These units were sold at industrial distributors and electrical wholesalers nationwide from September 2009 through February 2010 for about $25 and manufactured in China.

Nine Different Home Improvement Books Recalled with Faulty Wiring Instructions

On January 8, 2010 Oxmoor House, Inc., of Birmingham, AL recalled approximately 951,000 home improvement books. The books have errors in the wiring diagrams and wiring instructions that could lead you to incorrectly install or repair electrical wiring, posing an electrical shock or fire hazard to consumers. Thankfully, no injuries or incidents were reported.

Over-the-Range Microwaves Recalled by Samsung™ Due to Shock Hazard

On November 5, 2009 Samsung™ Electronics America Inc., of Ridgefield Park, N.J. recalled approximately 43,000 over-the-range microwave ovens. The reason for the recall is if an installation bolt comes in contact with an electrical component inside the unit and the microwave is plugged into an ungrounded outlet, it could create a shock hazard.

The recall involves Samsung™ 1000 watt over-the-range microwave ovens. The following model and serial numbers are included in this recall:

SurgeMaster™ Surge Protectors Recalled by Belkin International Inc. Due to Shock Hazard

Belkin surge protector On October 27, 2009 Belkin International Inc., of Compton, CA recalled approximately 68,700 SurgeMaster™ surge protectors. The molding of the plastic 360 degree rotating plug, which allows for easy cord movement, can crack or detach from the plug assembly, posing a shock hazard to consumers. Belkin has received seven consumer complaints about cracking of the plug molding. However, no injuries were reported.

This recall involves the SurgeMaster™ surge protector, models F9G930-10, F9G930v10, F9G930-10-W and F9G930-10-SN, all manufactured in 2003. The model number and date of manufacture are located on the underside of the unit. Grey models F9G930-10-GRY and F9G930fc10G-CL are not a part of this recall.

These units were sold by independent distributors nationwide and the internet by www.belkin.com from September 2003 through December 2007 for about $50. They were manufactured in China.
