I recently bought a tanning bed and it takes 220v with a buck booster. My problem is the apartment I am in wont allow me to add an extra outlet and the outlets that I have right now are all 4 prong and the Male end on the buck booster is 3 prong. My question is can I rewire the buck booster on just the one end to a 4 prong and everything work ok? Leave the 3 prong plug running into the buck booster and changing the end that plugs into the wall to a 4 prong?
Are you sure that you need the buck/boost transformer? Did you purchase the tanning bed from a commercial vendor? In a lot of commercial applications the voltage is 120/208 volts or 277/480 volts. In most all residential applications the voltage is 120/240 volts. If you install this buck/boost transformer the way you purchased it, then it will probably be wrong and possibly damage your tanning bed because of too much voltage.
A buck/boost transformer typically increases or decreases the voltage by a certain percentage depending upon how it is wired. The buck/boost transformer may have been used to increase or decrease the voltage from the previous owner. Because the buck/boost transformer increases or decreases the voltage by a certain percentage, you need to measure the voltage at your location before installing the buck/boost transformer to ensure the transformer is wired properly.
Grounding is also another important issue when installing any transformer. This is an advanced project and one that I do not recommend for a DIYer. I highly recommend hiring a licensed or qualified electrician to install this for you.
