Wayne’s electrical advice is given based upon the current National Electrical Code (NEC) and standard practices of the design, layout, installation and repair of heat light and power. The NEC is a minimum set of standards for the design, layout, installation and repair of heat light and power. Your local authority having jurisdiction is allowed to add to these rules and regulations. Please check with them before beginning any electrical work.
Wayne’s advice is based on information that you provide him. He is not at your project and he can’t advise you to correct problems that he does not see. Wayne is trained to look for potential fire hazards and code violations in addition to solving the problem. Most times, the potential fire hazards and code violations are the problem. Be sure to inspect all of your wiring thoroughly for any damaged cables, wire splices not in covered electrical boxes or any other potential fire hazards or code violations and repair them immediately.
Wayne can only give advice on electrical laws for the State of Montana where he is licensed. Wayne does not know the laws of your city, town or state. Please check with your local authority having jurisdiction (electrical inspector) before beginning any electrical work.
All electrical work requires that you pull an electrical permit with your local authority having jurisdiction (electrical inspector or building codes department). Most jurisdictions allow a homeowner to work on their home’s electrical system. However, some areas only allow work on branch circuits and not on main electrical service panels or meters. Some areas will not allow homeowner permits at all. This varies from town to town and state to state. Please check the rules and regulations with the local electrical inspector or building codes department in your area before beginning any electrical work.
All underground electrical work requires you to get locates before you begin digging. Most utility companies will provide these for free or they have a locator service they use. This will take some pre-planning, as most locates are required to be scheduled 2 business days minimum before you begin digging.
Any advice or other information offered by Wayne through any of our services (phone, email, IM, articles on this site, ebooks on this site, etc.) can’t fully anticipate all electrical wiring scenarios. If you are at all unsure about completing any aspect of your home electrical wiring or repair project, hire a licensed electrician or qualified electrical contractor to do the work for you.
